A fellow crocheter and her friends are planning to yarn bomb a new fence in their neighborhood. For this project they need a lot of crocheted flowers. I had a few stashed away and decided to mail them. My contribution wasn’t going to help much, so I made more.
But the flowers are so small, and the fence is so big. How can I make big flowers, and fast?
By making the middle bigger! By using heavier yarn and a bigger hook. For all flowers here I used worsted weight wool and a size US7 or 4½ mm hook. Since gauge is not important for these flowers, play around with different yarns and hooks, maybe use two or more strands of yarn. What is important though, is the sturdiness of the flowers, which depends on the surface they will be attached to. To make a sturdier flower use a smaller hook than the yarn calls for in order to make the crochet fabric more dense.
The pattern for the small flowers I already had done, is by Ali at VeryBerryHandmade.
I was in a hurry to mail the flowers and forgot to measure them. Look at the photo on top to compare their sizes to each other.
Abbreviations (US terminology):
st, sts – stitch, stitches
sl st – slip stitch
CH, ch – chain
SC, sc – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC, dc – double crochet
Big Flower #1
A cute, three dimensional classic. Add a couple of more rounds of petals if you want. Just add more stitches too!
1) CH 6, join with a sl st to a ring.
2) CH 3. 15 DC into ring. Join with a sl st to third chain.
3) CH 5, *skip one stitch, 2DC in next, CH 2*, repeat *-* all around, end with 1 DC in same stitch as the ch5, join with a sl st to third chain.
4) *Sl st into middle of 2dc cluster, 6 DC in ch2-space*, repeat *-* all around.
5) CH 3, *sl st from behind in middle of 6dc-cluster, CH 5*, repeat *-* all around, ending with a sl st in first sl st.
6) Make in every ch5-space: 1 SC, 1HDC, 4 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC.
7) CH 4, *sl st from behind in middle of previous petal, CH 6*, repeat *-* all around, ending with a sl st in first sl st.
8) Make in every ch6-space: 1 SC, 1 HDC, 6 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC.
Cut yarn, weave in ends. (Or, just make a knot!)
Big Flower #2
This is the fastest to make, and it’s slightly bigger than flower #1.
1) CH 6, join with a sl st to a ring.
2) CH 3, 15 DC in ring, join with a sl st in third chain.
3) CH 6, *skip one st, 1 DC in next, CH 3*, repeat *-* all around, join with a sl st in third chain of ch6.
4) Sl st around ch3-space, CH 3, 2DC, CH 8, sl st in dc just made (or, don’t sl st for a more open petal), 3 DC in same space, *3 DC, CH 8, sl st, 3 DC in next ch3-space*, repeat *-* all around. Join with a sl st in third chain.
5) *14 DC in ch8-space, sl st between 3dc-clusters* all around.
Cut yarn, weave in ends.
Big Flower #3
This is the biggest of them all! It’s sort of a sunflower, but changing colors makes it into any fantasy flower you want.
1) With brown yarn make a Magic Circle, CH 3
2) Make into the ring 6 Puff stitches with three wraps, and CH 3 between them. Sl st on top of first puff.
3) Sl st around ch3-space. CH 3, *make a Puff st, CH 3, Puff st in same ch3-space, CH 3*, repeat *-* making two puffs in every ch3-space around. Join with a sl st on top of first puff.
4) 4 SC in every ch3-space.
5) With yellow yarn SC in next 2 sts. CH 9, SC in second ch from hook, SC down along stem, SC in next 2 sts. Continue in the same way all around. Sl st in first sc.
6) *DC in next 8 back loops of sc-strand, 6 DC in very top of strand, DC in next 8 sc, sl st in middle of 4 sc.* Repeat *-* 11 more times. (12 petals)
