Crochet Ball & Chain

Crochet Ball & Chain Pattern

For Halloween we made a huge ghost. He was in a desperate need of a proper chain and ball to scare folks with. In order for him to carry it, it had to be of a lighter kind. So I crocheted it!

Ball

To make the ball I decided to cover a toy ball for the perfect round shape that would not be distorted by rough play. I found Dexter’s old, forgotten ball, and it’s a perfect size for my ghost.

Dexter’s ball is 17 inches / 44 cm in circumference. You can use any black yarn you want, but you might have to add or reduce the rounds to make it fit your ball. I used light worsted wool and a 4 mm hook.

R1) Start with a Magic circle, add 6 SC (single crochet), join.

R2) CH (chain) 1, 2 SC in each stitch, join. (12 sc)

R3) CH 1, *SC, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (18 sc)

R4) CH 1, *SC in next two sts (stitches), 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (24 sc)

R5) CH 1, *SC in next three sts, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (30 sc)

R6) CH 1, *SC in next four sts, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (36 sc)

R7) CH 1,SC in each st, join. (36 sc)

R8) CH 1, *SC in next 5 sts, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (42 sc)

R9) CH 1, SC in each st, join. (42 sc)

R10) CH 1, *SC in next six sts, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (48 sc)

R11) CH 1, SC in each st, join. (48 sc)

R12) CH1, *SC in next seven sts, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (54 sc)

R13) CH1, SC in each st, join. (54 sc)

R14) CH 1, *SC in next eight sts, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (60 sc)

R15) CH1, SC in each st, join. (60 sc)

R16) CH1, *SC in next nine sts, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (66 sc)

R 17) CH1, SC in each st, join. (66 sc)

R18) CH1, *SC in next ten sts, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round, join. (72 sc)

R19-20) Ch1, SC in each st, join. (72 sc)

This made a perfect half for my ball, tightly pulled over. Add, or remove, rounds to custom fit it to your ball. Then make the other half! Sew the two halves together about halfway, add the ball, then close it up.

Chain

Step 1) Chain 25, join to a ring. SC in each st.

Step 2) SC for six rounds without joining the rounds. Leave a long tail for sewing. Cut yarn.

Step 3) Bend the work with the right side out. Attach the edges with small stitches. Fasten off.

Step 4) The first chain is ready!

Step 5) Chain 25. Before joining into a ring, catch the first chain by going around it. Remember to crochet over the starting tail to avoid a tangle!

Crochet-Chain-#6

Step 6) It’s not difficult to crochet around another piece! As with the first chain, make 6 rounds and fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

Step 7) The first two chains. Starting to look like a chain! In the same manner, add as many chains as you want.

Attachment piece (I’m sure it has a real name … )

Step 8) Chain 26, SC in second ch from hook, SC in each stitch. CH 1, turn, SC in each st. Continue for 7 rows.

Step 9) To make this piece stand out, I added a thick piece of rope. Sew the edges together.

Step 10) With small stitches, attach one end of the piece to the ball. Insert the other end into your chain, then attach it close to the first end.

In this last photo you can see the colors of the ball peeking through. If you don’t want that, paint your ball or wrap it with strips of black fabric.

Happy Haunting!
