In my post Freeform Crochet Basics Part 4 I mention the single crochet spiral. It is so easy to make, it didn’t even occur to me to talk about it until a reader asked about it …
And the answer is that the only difference between a single crochet spiral and normal round crochet is the slip stitch!
A Single Crochet Spiral is made by crocheting SC in the round WITHOUT JOINING ( NO slip stitch, chain 1). Just continue round 2 by making a sc in the first sc of the previous round. To make it easier to know when a round is done, use a marker or a piece of yarn. I use a different color yarn placed between the last and the first stitch of the rounds. In the starting rounds it’s also easy to just count the stitches.
The single crochet spiral is often used in three dimensional work, as in amigurumi, balls, and hats. Or in big projects like rugs and afghans.
You can start the round shape any way you wish. Here’s some ideas:
1) Use a Magic Circle
2) Chain 2, 6 SC in first chain.
3) Chain 4, join into a ring with a slip stitch in the first chain, 6 SC around ring.
4) To make a hole in the middle: Chain 6, join into a ring with a slip stitch in the first chain, 12 SC around ring.
5) Crochet a circle any size you want, then start spiraling by no longer joining the rounds.
6) Make a medallion with bullion stitches, then start spiraling around.
7) Use something else for the center. Maybe a round piece of cloth, a metal ring or washer, or anything round you would like to add to the center.
8) The single crochet spiral doesn’t have to be round! It can follow any shape. Just know how to increase and decrease in the right places.

This spiral is made by crocheting in the back loops of the previous rounds. This will leave the front loop exposed to show the spiral construction.
Round 1: Make 6 SC in a Magic Circle, pull circle tight.
Round 2: 2 SC in the back loop of the first sc, then 2 SC in the back loops of each stitch around (12 sc).
Make all stitches into the back loops in all rounds.
Round 3: *SC in next, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-*to end of round (18 sc).
Round 4: *SC in next two stitches, 2 SC in next*, repeat *-* to end of round (24 sc).
Make the spiral as big as you want it, increasing on every round. At the end, slip stitch once or twice to make a round shape, if you so wish.
Round, and round, and round it goes! Makes me Dizzy … =)
